About

M
Main room
The largest room of the rave and, in some cases, the only room of the rave.
The main room is easily identified as the room that has the headlining DJ spinning on the biggest stage, using the best equipment, with the best soundsystem, the best visuals, the best lights, and the best props, though it doesn’t necessarily have the best music or the best vibe.
      In other words--an all-night concert.

Mainstream
Whatever it is, whatever people believe it to be, whatever form it may take, it is universally recognizable as something that will always come to you, not the other way around. (see Underground)

Marijuana (THC)
In the 1930’s a movie came out entitled ‘Reefer Madness’, which suggested that injesting a substance like tetrahydrocannabinol could lead to incurable insanity. The amazing thing about this ridiculous piece of propaganda is that its outrageous, unfounded claim actually worked, and succeeded in warding the American public from marijuana for a good twenty years or so. It might have very well continued for many generations more too, if it weren’t for a single event that America had not been counting on, an event that radically altered society’s attitude towards cannabis permanently: Vietnam.
Soldiers venturing to this distant, third world country naturally took up the native culture when they got there--including the smoking of exotic plants--and when they returned, naturally brought the culture home with them.
The result of America’s eight year investment in the country has made an indelible impact on western society, with stores, restaurants, cafes--in short, an entire industry set up--around this remarkable crop. And despite the fact that it is often used for medicinal purposes (both psychological and physical), its ability to control mood swings, induce complacency (as well as a light euphoria), its support garnered from millions of academics, professionals, and recreational users worldwide, it remains a Schedule-1 drug.

Massage
Ravers love massages. Especially ravers with bad backs. (see Backrub, MDMA)

Massive
1) A rave, featuring DJs with celebrity statures usually reserved for rock stars, using equipment and stages typically adapted for music halls, located in venues normally fitted for commercial theatres and operas, employing lights and visuals ordinarily used at concerts, and with a disposition towards its audience commonly seen at sports arenas. Only its a rave. (see Mainstream)
2) A social tribe, unified with distinct secular interests. (see Junglist)

MC
Master of Cockiness.
At their best, MC’s are to words what DJ’s are to music. At their worst, MC’s take to music like fingernails on a blackboard.

MDMA (ecstacy, e, x, xtc, adam, empathy, m)
Methylenedioxymethamphetamine puts forth a strong argument that if you can’t pronounce a drug’s chemical name, then you shouldn’t be doing it.
The odds of dying from an MDMA overdose are 1 in 3.6 million. So to prevent such a dangerous substance from proliferating, it has been made illegal in all countries in the world under a UN agreement.
The odds of dying in a rollar coaster accident are 1 in 3.2 million. The odds of dying by parachuting are 3 in 1000 per year. 1 in every 500,000 skiers are killed. Every year, soccer players run the risk of 1 in 25,000 of getting killed. And the odds of burning to death in your sleep are 1 in 10,000.1
Yet no one considers banning carnivals or skydiving. No one feels that our society would be much safer if we did away with ski resorts or soccer. And no one advocates for the elimination of houses because of fire risks.

Meatmarket
The atmosphere that sometimes develops at singles bars and clubs (and sometimes even raves), where people spend less time paying attention to the music, and more time paying attention to each other.

Media
Today in the modern West, of the many crisis’ addressed daily, critical is the nature of the Culture Industry's monopolistic control over expressive domain. The interests that control the state have effectively neutralized any mode of public expression that in the past had been empowering.
Along this course, the nature of music itself has become twisted, altered, and distorted to suit the needs of capital. If music is to contain any positive relevance again, it must be seized and controlled by the people. Until then it is nothing.
The values of mainstream culture have become so standardized and regulated that they no longer make any decisions for themselves. The Culture Industry does all their thinking for them.
In short, the mainstream is a society of blindly accepting consumers, latching on to meaningless terms like "alternative", "progressive", "industrial", "techno", "rap", "house". They are promised liberation but are given empty distractions. In their society, music is a measure of forced consumption.
Until the social conditions under which music is made are changed, music has no meaning. In the 90's Big Business and Big Government realize that they no longer need to demonstrate the intimidation and violent suppression of past authoritarian states. They have proved conclusively that friendly fascism clearly exists in this society and that the rulers of Corporate America have manufactured within its own people an addiction to pop culture so powerful it renders them incapable of any action as individuals or collective citizens. The real tragedy here is that this is not perceived as a problem.
Every controlling regime has its spectacle to keep the people pacified. In today’s society it is the music award show, parading the industry and showing live coverage of them patting themselves on the back.
So long as people are willing to go on passively marching and singing to this, then music truly has no meaning.2

Meth head
Also called tweakers, jibbernaughts, or jibb-tech warriors, methheads are the people who keep on dancing, even long-after the music has stopped. (see Crystal meth)

Mixer
An important device once used to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts, now mostly kept and pandered to for ceremonious reasons.

Mixing
An artform, once the hallmark niche of the DJ, that has somewhat declined over the years, in accordance with the rising popularity of DJing.

Mp3
music freedomTo those who think music is an artform, it is a godsend. A high-compression, high-quality musical format delivered over the computer that can be sent to literally anyone in the world with a modem connection. It is a liberator of music, a champion of the amateur musician, and a sneak peak at the the future of music distribution.
music monopoly To those who think music is a business, it is a sign of the apocalypse. A musical format coveted only by pirates and thieves, threatening to disrupt (or even topple) the very foundation upon which the recording industry rests. It seeks to impoverish musicians, leach upon the wealth and talents of major productions, and cripple music as a capital venture altogether.

Mushrooms
(see Psilocybin/Psilocin)

Talking about music is like dancing about architecture.3 (see Dance, House)

Mall Raver
You've seen them in the food courts of Suburbia, but never at a party. Wearing that uniform of expansive fabric and dayglo, with big neon plastic wallet chains hanging down to their ankles. When approached, they ask you if heard the latest Master P song.
-- Chad H., January 26, 2000

"munted"
definition: to be in a particularly addled, yet content, state of mind as a result of ingesting too much, or just enough high-quality MDMA
e.g. "I'm munted"
so i'm told...
-- ali, January 27, 2000

MASSIVE can also be defined as a form of jungle with a raga/rasta man hypin it up on the microphone (to the music).
-- Christina, April 6, 2000

I'm a past partykid that no longer attends parties because of the media and the thugs. My parents got caught up in the news about all the chemicals at parties and I'm not too impressed about all the hoochies and thugs that attend and abuse the whole affect of parties and the vibe that goes on. The last time I ever went to a party and consumed ecstacy was October 10, 1999, Scratch n' Rave. I think there's a couple of souls that think the same way I do and have the punishment of no longer participating in the rave scene.

At their best, a good MC can be a brilliant poet, a prophit, a revolutionary, and a comedian all at once... Who else in this day and age can say that. At their worst, MCs, especially those "owned" by the "Media" (predominantly MTV) can be incredibly dangerous to our society, given the somewhat supernatural ability they seem to have to tell label tarts and their male counter parts (who in my estimation, make up at least 85% of American youth. Sad sad sad.) what to do.

I enjoyed your definition of the media. I think the most ludicrous aspect of it is the notion that you too aren't completely controlled by the media. Just like every other scene in the world, you have separation and different levels of how cool everyone is and who is accepted or rejected for the ideals they hold truest. The rave scene is worse than a highschool popularity parade and contains just as much elitism. If you are so free and your culture is so amorphous, you wouldn't possibly be able to document it in a dictionary with such intensity. The "rave" culture, if you still prefer to call it that, has been so overdocumented by the media that it is already sickeningly plain and filled with barhoochies and gino's as illustrated by this very webpage. Your scene is dead and the trend is over. Get on with your life and grow up.

music means way more then that, it makes the world go around. if it wasn't for music raves wouldn't exsist. music is the maker of parties and party kids
-- star , October 4, 2000

"mp3" and free music production software have a chance to bring down "media", with consumers turning into producers. and they don't necessarily need to make a living out of it by forcing it down other people's throats either. next stage please

Meth Monkey- sort of like a crack monkey, someone who has done way too much meth and is now a different person than before. A person to pity.
-- Mick, December 19, 2000

honestly, it is disapointing to see so many people complain about music and it's progression. It has always been about money and attracting people. Very few bands will ever admit to doing it for the music. It's usually drugs, sex, or the fact of being noticed. There is ALWAYS a need for gratification in the human species(esp americans). This is a FACT of life. We all want to be noticed in some way or another by eachother. Musicians are mainly people that have manage to have done this, and want to tell a story about what is going on around them. I admire a few (mainly 60's) because they are the founders of alot of the breaking from the grains of society. Their music was mainly politicaly driven to make people aware of what is going on in that society(this isn't the case some of the times tho but alot where politicaly driven). If you look at music today, it is a rehash of 60's early 70's. So much of a rehash that it is an exact copy. Even then, once a musician has started their "career" they more than often, despise it, and don't enjoy what they do and it becomes a chore. All in all music is for short term enjoyment and people should do what makes them happy, not question it. If you keep questioning what life is about you are wasting your time, and not discovering what is out there and what can be done.

Media:
The media are the message.
(To paraphrase Marshal McLuhan (sp?))
-- Da 1 Like Damaja, May 16, 2001

don't think agree with your "I see nothing wrong with MDMA and am going to make abirtrary comparisons of why it isn't bad at all" analysis. Why do we need drugs to have a good time, to enjoy the music, to dance? Believe it or not, but drugs to alter who you are and can very negatively affect you both mentally and physically, and some of us can enjoy the scene perfectly fine without feeling the need to fuck ourselves up and artificially change our personality and mood.
